the truth

Thursday, January 30

"Girls are trained to say ‘I wrote this, but it’s probably really stupid.’ Well, no, you wouldn’t write a novel if you thought it was really stupid. Men are much more comfortable going, ‘I wrote this book because I have a unique perspective that the world needs to hear.’ Girls are taught from the age of 7 that if you get a compliment, you don’t go, ‘Thank you’, you go, ‘No, you’re insane.’"
- Lena Dunham

Dealt with this today, Lena. I got shade thrown at me for sharing my "faux art pretentious writing" all over facebook when I'm not even a "real artist." Well, screw you guys. I think I am. (I'd like to point out that it was a boy who said this to me. Take that for what you will.) I am an artist. I love other artists. I have never sought to be pretentious. I work damn hard. I write often. I read even more. I work and I learn. I am an artist and I deserve to share. If you don't like it, get off my site, don't click my links, don't buy my books. I am talented, I am an artist, I will succeed. I'm sorry if that offends anyone here personally.

To all my writer/blogger/painter friends. You are artists. You are talented. You work your asses off. You will succeed. Your degrees are not a waste, nor is your passion or your dreams. I believe in you.

  1. i don't remember how i found your blog. probably as i was blog hopping one day. doesn't matter. the important part is that i found it. i am always excited to read what new things you have written. you have a way with words, and, as i read by your many comments, others know it, too. forget the one insignificant negative comment in the sea of positives. that one negative will sink, sink, sink to the bottom. dead weight, don't need it. however, i must say that i feel the exact same way about my art. i love creating jewelry and cards, but i tend to shrug it off like it ain't no thing. well, it's a big thing! and something that i really enjoy. we are artists! let's embrace it.

  3. This really needed to be said! You are seriously talented and this guy is silly to say otherwise - amazing literary classics are often called rubbish but just because some people fail to see the beauty in something amazing doesn't mean other won't and that, fundamentally, it isn't there.Fitzgerald wasn't praised for writing Gatsby initially but it is a great book and I think people are just too quick to judge - I don't think anyone who writes or reads would mind being similar to a young Fitzgerald in some circumstances! yep, I'm rambling now and in a very round-about way I am trying to say this: you are talented, people will always fail to understand things and for every silly person who doesn't see the beauty in your writing there are a world of others who do. :)

  7. well said!
fuck that guy,,,,and the others that will rise up and criticize your work, those will never cease to exist.
people will always criticize what they don't understand, judge what they don't like and talk shit about what they feel jealous about...fuck it, you do what makes you happy, regardless what other people say.
many succesful artists have said that if they had listened to every single.person that told them they would never succeed and that they were nuts, they would have never gotten there.
the lion never worries about what other sheep think of him, right?
you go follow your dreams, never give up....you'll get there if you really want.
    much love!

  9. This is the creepiest comment I'll ever leave on a blog, I hope that you don't get too weirded out. I found your blog while bloghopping around one day and realized that I recognized your name because we have mutual friends. I saw that thread on Facebook, and that guy is a total ass. Anyone who likes to take "burn opportunities" shouldn't be given the time of day.

I absolutely love your blog. Your writing is beautiful. Keep doing what you do.

  10. I couldn't agree more. I had a friend read a piece and she told me she really loved it, except I made unimportant things feel too important. Apparently she missed the point. Don't let the bastards get you down!

  11. Your writing is beautiful and one can easily tell that you are serious, you work hard and you spent a lot of time reading and re-writing. But good writing - in my opinion - will always make you vulnerable. Those haters will never dare to put themselves out there. So what does their opinion matter? What have they got to offer? What real risks do they take? What is their passion? Would you ask these people for their opinion on buying a dress or some other minor issue? no, never! so- how much does their opinion on a really important issue like your writing really count then?
Any serious writer doubts himself or herself, regardless of his/her sex. I have seen so many boys who were really dead serious about their pieces apologizing, being terrified to share...
Keep going and most of all – keep writing!

  16. Screw them. Girls always hated me more than boys, I don't know why. I don't write for them or anyone, just myself. You should too my dear.
